I was a musician at the Oakland Cathedral during this time period, and was greatly inspired by the events that took place. What a creative time period in the history of the Catholic Church! Don Osuna has always been very supportive of music in the church, and was responsible for supporting my musical career.
"How Awesome is this Place!" is a true account, an entertaining and instructive book about how attendance at Mass can really teach us to "love one another" and be balm for our own souls.
It was my good fortune to attend St. Francis de Sales Cathedral during the years Fr. Osuna so graphically describes. His memoir provokes a yearning nostalgia for the deep spirituality, goodwill and joy that the liturgies at Oakland Cathedral provided. The Scripture readings and gospels were so clearly relevant to our own lives and to current world affairs, inspiring us to worship God in a deeply spiritual way, both individually and in community with the vast number of people who flocked to St. Francis.
I highly recommend this book. It is a fascinating story and the many photographs confirm its reality and bring it to life.
Great . Book was a beautiful remembrance of times spent at St. Francis Church in Oakland, CA. Osuna brought people back to church with his wonderful talent of bringing religion and music together.
Don was a classmate of mine. He is a very talented musician and writer. His work at the Oakland Cathedral put that edifice on the map.
In engaging prose Father Don Osuna relates how the events in his life led him on a musical and liturgical path that culminated with nineteen creative years at the Oakland Cathedral.
The reader is taken on an emotional journey through the turbulent 1960s and 1970s to the backlashes of the 1980s in the country and in the Catholic Church. Throughout those decades Fr. Osuna describes how the liturgy at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral revolutionized the way American Catholics worshiped. It didn't take long for the word to spread -- even to the Vatican.
It's a book you will enjoy reading -- not only for the wonderful writing but for the thirty-four pages of glorious photography by J. A. Rubino.
